Handicap betting explained, from -1 to the quarter lines
A handicap gives one team a head start or a deficit before the match begins. It turns a one-sided fixture into a closer contest and changes the odds on both sides.
A handicap bet adjusts the score before the match starts. One team is given a deficit, the other a head start, and your bet is settled on the adjusted result rather than the real one. The idea is to make an uneven match a fairer contest from a betting point of view, so a strong favourite at 1/4 to win might be priced near evens once it has to give a goal start.
Handicaps are most common in football, and that is where this guide focuses, but the same logic runs through rugby, basketball and cricket. There are two main families: the European handicap, which keeps the draw, and the Asian handicap, which removes it.
The European handicap
A European handicap, sometimes called a three-way handicap, adds whole goals to one side and leaves three possible outcomes: home win, handicap draw, away win.
Say City play Town and the market reads City -1. City start a goal behind for the bet. Add -1 to City’s real score, then read the result:
- City win 3-1: adjusted 2-1, City -1 wins.
- City win 2-1: adjusted 1-1, the handicap draw wins.
- Draw 1-1: adjusted 0-1, Town +1 wins.
Worked example: £10 on City -1 at 2.10
City are priced 1.40 to win the match outright, which is about 2/5. The -1 handicap is priced 2.10 (11/10).
- City win by two or more: £10 x 2.10 = £21 returned, £11 profit.
- City win by exactly one: the handicap draw lands, your bet loses.
- Draw or Town win: your bet loses.
The bigger price reflects the extra condition: City now need a two-goal winning margin.
The Asian handicap
The Asian handicap removes the draw, leaving two sides. It does this in one of two ways: half-goal lines, which make a draw impossible, or whole-goal lines, which refund the stake if the adjusted score is level. Quarter lines combine the two.
Half-goal lines: -0.5, -1.5
A -0.5 handicap is the same as backing a team to win the match: any win clears the half goal. A -1.5 handicap needs a win by two or more. There is no refund on half lines; the bet wins or loses.
Whole-goal lines: -1, +1
On an Asian -1, a win by two or more wins the bet, a win by exactly one returns your stake (a push), and anything else loses. On +1, a win or draw wins the bet and a one-goal defeat is a push.
Worked example: £10 on City -1 (Asian) at 1.95
- City win 3-1 (by two): £10 x 1.95 = £19.50 returned, £9.50 profit.
- City win 2-1 (by one): push, £10 returned.
- Draw or Town win: the bet loses, £0.
Quarter lines: -0.25, -0.75, +0.25
Quarter lines split your stake in half across the two nearest lines. A -0.75 bet is half on -0.5 and half on -1. A -0.25 bet is half on 0 (draw no bet) and half on -0.5.
Worked example: £10 on City -0.75 at 1.90
£5 goes on -0.5 and £5 on -1, both at 1.90.
- City win by two or more: both halves win. £5 x 1.90 + £5 x 1.90 = £19.00 returned, £9 profit.
- City win by exactly one: the -0.5 half wins (£5 x 1.90 = £9.50), the -1 half is a push (£5 back). Total £14.50, a profit of £4.50.
- Draw or Town win: both halves lose, £0.
In fractional terms 1.90 is 9/10, so each winning £5 half makes £4.50 profit.
Asian handicap outcomes at a glance
How a bet on the favourite settles, by the favourite’s winning margin:
| Line | Lose or draw | Win by 1 | Win by 2 | Win by 3+ |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| -0.25 | Draw: half refund, half lost. Loss: lost | Full win | Full win | Full win |
| -0.5 | Lost | Full win | Full win | Full win |
| -0.75 | Lost | Half win, half refund | Full win | Full win |
| -1 | Lost | Refund | Full win | Full win |
| -1.25 | Lost | Half refund, half lost | Full win | Full win |
| -1.5 | Lost | Lost | Full win | Full win |
The underdog side mirrors this: a +0.75 bet loses half and has half refunded when the favourite wins by one, and wins in full on a draw or an underdog win.
Why people use handicaps
Better prices on favourites. Backing a strong side at 1.40 to win means risking £10 to make £4. A -1 or -1.5 line asks more of the favourite in exchange for a price closer to evens.
Value on underdogs. A +1 or +1.5 line lets you back a side you expect to keep it close without needing them to win.
Fewer outcomes. Asian lines strip the draw out of the match, which many people find easier to reason about than a three-way market.
The trade-off is that a handicap is a more precise prediction. You are not just calling the winner but the margin, and stoppage-time goals settle a lot of these bets.
Handicaps, multiples and free bets
Handicap selections can usually go into doubles and accas, and the settlement of each leg follows the rules above. A pushed leg is treated like a void selection, settled at 1.0, and a half-win leg is settled at a reduced price. For a £10 double containing a -0.75 leg that wins by one goal at 1.90, the leg is worth 1.45 in the double, since £10 would have returned £14.50 on its own. Our bet calculator handles the standard bet types so you can check returns before you place a multiple.

A note on horse racing handicaps
In racing, “handicap” means something else. A handicap race is one where the official handicapper assigns different weights to each horse so that, in theory, they all have an equal chance. You bet on the result as normal; there is no goal or point adjustment. Handicap races matter for each way betting because big-field handicaps attract different place terms.

What does -1 mean in handicap betting?
The team starts the match a goal behind for the purpose of the bet. To win a -1 bet they must win by two or more goals. What happens if they win by exactly one depends on the type: in a European handicap that result is the handicap draw, in an Asian -1 handicap your stake is returned.
What does +1 mean in handicap betting?
The team starts a goal ahead for the purpose of the bet. In a European handicap, Team +1 wins if they win or draw the real match. In an Asian +1 handicap, the bet wins on a win or draw and is refunded if they lose by exactly one goal.
What is the difference between Asian and European handicaps?
A European handicap has three outcomes, home, handicap draw and away, like a normal match result market. An Asian handicap removes the draw by using half-goal lines or by refunding stakes when the adjusted score is level, so there are only two sides to bet on.
What is a -0.75 Asian handicap?
It is a split bet. Half your stake goes on -0.5 and half on -1. If your team wins by one goal, the -0.5 half wins and the -1 half is refunded. If they win by two or more, both halves win. A draw or defeat loses both halves.
Is handicap betting only for football?
No. Handicaps are used in rugby, basketball and American sports, often as points spreads, and in cricket and tennis on runs or games. In horse racing, a handicap is a type of race where horses carry different weights, which is a separate idea from a handicap bet.
Can I use a free bet on a handicap market?
Often yes, as long as the market is allowed by the offer and the odds meet the minimum. Some free bets are restricted to accas or Bet Builders, so check the free bet type in the terms before you choose a market.
