Horse Racing Festival Offers and How They Work
Cheltenham, Aintree, Royal Ascot, Goodwood and York bring a rush of free bets and specials. Here is what each type of offer really gives you and the terms that decide whether it pays.

Here is the verdict first: the most useful horse racing festival offers are usually the concessions that change how a normal bet pays, such as extra places and Best Odds Guaranteed, rather than the biggest free bet headline. A free bet gives you a stake that is not returned. An extra place or a better starting price changes the return on your own money. For new customers, the welcome offer that actually accepts a racing bet matters more than any festival banner, and on our racecard that narrows the field quickly.
Most pages ranking for Cheltenham free bets or Grand National free bets are lists of this year’s deals that go out of date the moment the meeting ends. This page does the opposite. It explains each type of festival offer, how to read its terms, and which welcome offers on our racecard work on UK racing at all, using the short terms recorded from operator records dated 15 October 2026. We do not test offers or place bets to rate them.
The big festivals and when they run
The calendar at the top of this page places each one in the year, with the course, how long it runs and the offers it usually brings.
Dates move a little each year, so check the racecourse’s own fixture list. The pattern is reliable enough to plan around: bookmakers tend to publish festival offers in the days before the first race and update them daily.
Types of festival offers
Extra places
An extra places offer pays the place part of an each-way bet on more positions than the standard terms. Big handicap fields, such as the Grand National, often get the most generous versions. Check the place fraction as well as the number of places, because a bookmaker can pay an extra place at a less generous fraction of the odds. Our guide to each-way betting shows how the two parts settle.
Best Odds Guaranteed
Best Odds Guaranteed, or BOG, pays you the starting price if it is bigger than the price you took. It is a concession, not a right. Bookmakers set their own conditions, such as a maximum extra payout, the times when it applies and the races it covers. Some do not offer it on certain accounts, so confirm it shows on your bet slip.
Money back as a free bet
These specials refund your stake if your horse finishes in a named position, for example second, or in some offers if it falls. The refund is almost always a free bet, not cash, with a maximum amount, minimum odds and a short expiry. A refund of a £10 stake as a £10 free bet is worth less than £10, because the free bet stake will not come back with any winnings.
Price boosts
A price boost lengthens the odds on a selection. It is only good value if the boosted price beats the best price available elsewhere. Boosted bets usually carry a low maximum stake and are often excluded from cash out and from qualifying for other offers.
New customer free bets
Around the Grand National and Cheltenham, new customer offers often switch to racing. The structure is the same as any bet-and-get offer: place a qualifying bet, receive free bets. What changes is the small print on which races the free bets can be used for.
How to read festival offer terms
Before you rely on any racing festival offer, find six things in the terms. The qualifying markets, since some offers only count win bets or exclude each-way. The minimum odds, which on our racecard is commonly 1/1 for welcome offers. The maximum refund or free bet amount. The expiry, because a free bet credited on the last day of a festival may expire before the next meeting you care about. Whether the reward is cash or a free bet. And whether you must opt in before placing the bet, which is easy to miss in a busy week.
Welcome offers on our racecard that accept racing
Tote’s offer accepts a first £5 bet at 1/1 or greater on sports or racing, and if you bet each-way it needs £5 on the win and £5 on the place. It credits £10 in Tote Credit for racing plus £10 in sports bets, with a 7 day expiry on the Tote Credit. BetMGM accepts a sports bet within 7 days of registration, but its terms exclude non-UK and Irish horse racing, so festivals in Britain qualify while overseas racing does not. Betano and Parimatch need the qualifying bet on football, so they will not help on a festival day. Our new horse racing betting sites page goes through each operator in more detail.
Festival week without overdoing it
Festival weeks pack a lot of races into a few days, and offers are designed to keep you betting on every one. Set a deposit limit for the week before the first race, not during it. Decide in advance which races you will bet on, and leave the rest. If you find yourself chasing a loss from the first day, take a time-out from your account settings. Free support is listed on our responsible gambling page.
Before you open a new account for a festival, check the brand among the newest UK bookmakers and compare its offer terms on our list of new betting sites.

What are Grand National free bets?
They are free bets offered around the Grand National meeting at Aintree every April, usually to new customers who place a qualifying bet. The free bet stake is not returned with your winnings, and many come with minimum odds, an expiry date and a limit on which races they can be used for.
Can I use a standard welcome offer on Cheltenham or the Grand National?
Only if the offer accepts racing. On our racecard, Tote's offer includes £10 in Tote Credit for racing, and BetMGM accepts UK and Irish racing bets but excludes non-UK and Irish racing. Betano and Parimatch require the qualifying bet on football.
What does extra places mean?
An extra places offer pays the place part of an each-way bet on more finishing positions than the standard terms. If a bookmaker pays five places instead of four and your horse finishes fifth, the place part wins. The win part still needs your horse to win.
Is Best Odds Guaranteed the same at every bookmaker?
No. Best Odds Guaranteed pays the starting price when it is bigger than the price you took, but bookmakers set their own limits, such as a maximum extra payout, qualifying times or excluded races. Some withdraw it for selected customers, so check it is active on your account.
What is a money back as a free bet offer?
If your horse finishes second, or falls, depending on the offer, the bookmaker refunds your stake as a free bet rather than as cash. There is usually a maximum refund, and the free bet has its own expiry and minimum odds.
When do festival offers appear?
Most bookmakers publish them in the days before each meeting and update them race by race. Cheltenham runs every March, the Grand National meeting every April, Royal Ascot every June, Glorious Goodwood at the end of July or start of August, and York's Ebor meeting every August.
Are price boosts worth taking?
A boost is only good value if the boosted price beats what you could get elsewhere. Boosted bets are often excluded from cash out and from qualifying for other offers, and they usually have a low maximum stake.
